Of Things I Can't Unthink, 2018 ed.

240 hours

Give or take a few …. But it was all worth it. “Of Things I Can’t Unthink” is up again in a new iteration, installed in the unparalleled beauty of the West Fjords. The Factory, in Djupavik, Iceland, will host this spectacular piece, along with the work of many other talented artists from June 1st until August 31st, 2018. It’s a little bit out of the way but well worth the drive.

Beautiful photos of the installation process by Randy Antonia, Réza Kalfane and Julie Dodge.  Super special thanks to Heide Schimke for the super special video of my super cool piece. Super.

If you have a chance, sink you peepers into it, maybe with a little bit of this.  But don't watch their video, watch mine. (Just kidding, their work is beautiful and should be seen by all so watch it too!)

Next up, Portugal........

Summer Line Up

I have a few exciting shows coming up this summer that I'd love to share with you. If you are in Calgary, Portugal or Iceland, please stop in and have a look if you have a chance!

I have the pleasure of re-installing "Of Things I Can't Unthink" at The Factory in Djupavik, Iceland. This exhibition is in an retired mid century herring factory in the West Fjords, running from June 1- August 31, 2018, and I promise that the drive, location and space itself (including my piece, obviously) are well worth the travel.

After a few years of work, I am finally finalizing my installation at Convento dos Capuchos in Capuchos/ Costa da Caparica, Portugal. Tempo e Espaço will open on July 21, 2018 and run until October 20. I'll share the time and a poster soon! There will be wine................

And finally, PROCESS: Thinking Through Craft has arrived in Calgary and the Alberta Craft Council cSPACE King Edward. I am showing a glass thread sculpture from my "Wind" series. It runs from June 9- August 18 and includes many beautiful hand made objects to peep on, so please stop by and say hi!

Back to work....... "Of Things I Can't Unthink"'s 10,000 teeth don't install themselves..............

GAS Member Monday

Hey look at this! I am this weeks Member Monday Artist on the Glass Art Society website. I am proud to be chosen to share my work with the glass community, and the world. If you have a moment please give the lil' interview a read too! You can find it here. And as always, here are three of my current musical muses. I'm packing up to go work for the month at Lofoten Glass with my beautiful friend from years ago, so you'll be seeing some hotshop and nature porn up here soon too.

With Love,

All I Think About is Horse Hair, All Day Long All I do is Think About Horse Hair All Day Long

…… and other reasons I haven’t written for over an entire year.  2017 was a heady year. I had the opportunity, and with it the craziness, of moving through a few countries and working in Canada,  Iceland and Portugal, where I had the honour of collaborating with the prestigious Vista Alegre Atlantis.  Since settling into surgery recovery in Canada, I’ve been musing over the last year and what I’ve really been so busy with. The reality of it is, I’ve been busy with horse hair.  I think about horse hair pretty much all day long.

During brief lapses of reality, I have taken the time to update my website with some work from 2017. New! Yay! Celebrate! The photos are a selection from my last two solos shows in Lisbon in Autumn 2017.

While you peek on that, try a listen to this. I’ll keep this one short while I ruminate on title piracy (yarrrrr.....heavy stuff for another day), healing thoughts and obviously, horse hair.

Girl Boss Power

Girls unite! It seems to be a current theme these days and it couldn't be more welcome (and long overdue) if you ask me. I had the pleasure of being interviewed on Girl Boss Create, Creative Inspiration for Creative Girl Bosses. The website features the work of fabulous female makers, tutorials, collaborations and wisdom. It's a great place to find hand made items, seek inspiration and ask questions as makers, entrepreneurs and new business creatives. Have a read and tell me what you think!

And if you missed your chance to purchase one from the last batch, I just finished some more Crystal Wishbone Necklaces. Get one before they sell out again, and they have been going fast :) Available in silver or gold color.

Until next time, stay creative......

More Photos!

In an attempt to keep things short and sweet I'm going to barrage you with a million (or so) photos of my exhibition instead of words (this time).  Opening night photos by Kristinvjam and catalogue photos by D10PHOTO. Stay tuned for the catalogue coming out mid September! Its going to be PRETTY!

Wooden Horses And Paper Planes

After a few weeks of procrastination and denial mixed with a healthy dose of confusion, I am happy to officially announce my exhibition at the Museu Nacional de Historia Natural e da Ciência in Lisbon!

I will show my recent sculptures and drawings in an insanely gorgeous and highly intimidating space, Antigo Picadeiro do Colégio dos Nobres from July 14th until August 11th, with the opening shenanigans on July 14th at 19hr.  If you are in the area I would love to see you there and share a glass of wine and a chat!

Thank you again to everyone who came to my last show in Iceland, So Here Only Briefly. Here are some photos from the exhibition (complete with the obligatory "Carissa laughing maniacally" photo), and of course a few more shots from my travels.

I hope to post some in progress work soon. I have been listening to this in an effort to keep my grasp on sanity firmly anchored..... however......  it may take a little bit more than a good waltz.

I'm just not ready

One week left and I am just not ready to go home yet. I've been having an incredible time in Iceland, full of new friends and new experiences. I'm going to spend the next few precious days enjoying it to the fullest, so here are a quick few images of my adventures so far (insert Iceland porn).

Oh, and did I mention: I had a show of only drawings! Who would have thought? More photos to come soon!

Just a taste

I won't bore you with too much writing, but I will post a few photos to whet your curiosity. My first week in Iceland has been wonderful so far, complete with some aurora borealis sightings! What more could a girl ask for? I don't  have any photos of that, but I do have other beautiful tableaux including some in progress shots of my recent crystal casting that will be part of a piece for the museum later this year. I hope you enjoy!

Hello 2016! (Insert Catchy Title)

First post of the year, finally! I want to wish a happy and healthy 2016 to all! The new years positivity is palpable. Thank you so much to everyone who supported me through a rollercoaster ride of 2015. It was a tumultuous but maturing year if nothing else. The New Year has already brought new and marvelous news. I will have the pleasure of presenting a solo exhibition at Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência in late 2016.  The dates are still to be determined but I absolutely can’t wait for the opportunity. It has given me the push I need to get through a bit of an artistic dry spell.  It is hard to remember sometimes that nothing flowers all year round; there is a time to sow and a time to reap.

I am also getting geared up for another residency in Iceland in March and April. This time I will be going for TWO FULL MONTHS. Wow. I’m enthusiastic, but also a bit nervous about taking such a long period of time away from the faculty. I think that I will use the period to focus on my thesis research and do some mold making and writing. A period of intense introspection, ignited by solitude, a change of landscape and a sprinkle of loneliness, can only lead to good things.

Now for the most important part of my post: I want to say THANK YOU to my partner in crime, my rock and the leader of the Carissa fan club for nominating me for the ACAD Alumni Awards. I am honoured that because of your belief in me I have received the ACAD Alumni Horizon Award and the TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Career Award for Alumni.  Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the award ceremony myself on March 31st, but my super awesome cool guy artist brother will be there to accept the award for me! Thank you The Alberta College of Art and Design for the recognition and for providing such amazing support and resources to their students and alumni.

That was a bit long winded but so much is new! Have a look, while you listen, at some of the things I have been up to lately, including many in-process shots and a few too many cell phone photos.  I wish you all a relaxed, happy and healthful new year……... See you soon.
